Bronchos Fall In Top 20 Showdown

EDMOND (Sept. 28) – A top-20 showdown that went back-and-forth throughout the first three sets fizzled in the end as No. 18-ranked Central Oklahoma succumbed to No. 13 Washburn Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos fell 25-20 in the opening set before pulling out a 25-23 second-set victory to tie the match only to see the Ichabods prevail 26-24 in a third-set thriller.  That loss turned the tide and Washburn rolled 25-13 in the fourth set to remain unbeaten.

UCO fell to 16-4 on the season and 4-2 in league play in having a 12-match home winning streak snapped.  The Ichabods, one of just three undefeated teams left in NCAA Division II, improved to 18-0 and 5-0.

"It was a great battle the first three sets, but we came out flat in the fourth one and they took advantage of that," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We made too many mistakes and you can't do that against a team like Washburn or they will make you pay."

Central had 11 of its 29 attack errors in the fourth set and finished the match with a .121 attack percentage.

Taylor Bevis paced the Bronchos with 19 kills, 19 digs and three assisted blocks.  Haley Deschenes had 12 kills, while Malia Kaaiohelo, Jordan Spence and Karyn Chrisman had five each.

McKenzie Fyfe dished out 24 assists and Ericka School had 19 assists with 14 digs.  Dominique Lipari contributed a match-high 21 digs from her libero post.

Washburn broke away from a 12-12 tie with four straight points in grabbing the first set and then built an early 8-3 lead in the second.

UCO battled back, took its first lead at 17-16 on a Chrisman kill and went up 21-17 only to see the Ichabods come back to tie it at 23-all.  But the Bronchos got a kill down the middle from Deschenes to move back in front and won the set on a Washburn error.

Bevis had eight of her 19 kills in the third set that featured 11 ties, knocking down three hard shots in a row to put Central in front 22-20.  The Ichabods came back to take a 24-23 lead before a Spence spike at the net tied it again, but Washburn scored the final two points to close it out.

The Bronchos fell behind 9-1 in the fourth set and never recovered.

Central will look to bounce back Saturday afternoon, hosting Emporia State at 4 p.m. in another
MIAA tilt.
