UCO Upset Bid Falls Short

KEARNEY, Neb. (Sept. 21) -- A gallant upset try fell short for Central Oklahoma here Friday night as the No. 16-ranked Bronchos fell in a five-set struggle to No. 6-rated Nebraska-Kearney.

UCO won the opening set 25-22, overcame a 25-20 second-set loss to take the third 25-17 before the defending Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association champion Lopers won the final two sets 25-17, 15-9 for their 61st straight home win.  The Bronchos had a 14-match winning streak snapped in falling to 15-3 overall and 3-1 in league play.

"We battled hard and gave ourselves a chance, but UNK just made more plays down the stretch than we did," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "This is one of the hardest places in the country to play and I was proud of the way we fought.  We came up a little short tonight and will just have to bounce back tomorrow."

Central moves on to Hays, Kan. Saturday to take on Fort Hays State at 4 p.m.

Haley Deschenes knocked down a career-high 19 kills to lead the Bronchos.  Taylor Bevis contributed 17 kills and 19 digs in another stellar all-around outing for the senior All-American.

UCO also got nine kills from Karyn Chrisman and seven from Amanda Desch.  Dominique Lipar dug up 33 attacks -- her third 30-plus dig outing of the season -- while McKenzie Fyfe had 25 assists and 18 digs and Ericka Scholl 25 assists and 10 digs.

The first set went back-and-forth throughout and was deadlocked 22-all when the Bronchos scored the final three points, getting a kill from Desch, a UNK attack error and a combined block from Malia Kaaiohelo and Fyfe to end it.

The Lopers tied the match with the second-set win and had a 4-3 lead early in the third when UCO ripped off five unanswered points to surge ahead for good.  Deschenes had two kills and teamed with Kaaiohelo for a block to key that deciding run and back-to-back Bevis kills closed out the set.

Central was up 10-7 in the fourth set before UNK went on a 7-0 run to take the lead en route to tying the match and the Lopers broke away from an 8-8 tie in the fifth and deciding set with a 6-0 spurt.
