Late Rally Lifts UCO Past Gorillas

PITTSBURG, Kan. (Sept. 18) – Jordan Spence and Taylor Bevis combined for 29 kills as Central Oklahoma rallied past Pittsburg State in dramatic fashion here Tuesday night.

The No. 16-ranked Bronchos prevailed 25-20, 17-25, 24-26, 25-19, 15-13 in the key Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association showdown for their 14th consecutive win.  UCO improved to 15-2 on the season and 3-0 in the league while ending the Gorillas' six-match winnings streak.

"That was big, big win for us," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We made a lot of mistakes and really had our backs to the wall, but the girls kept their composure and did a great job battling back on the road against a really good team."

Spence was an offensive catalyst for the Bronchos, finishing with a blistering .519 attack percentage.  The senior middle blocker knocked down a season-high 16 kills against two errors in 27 attempts in addition to making two assisted blocks.

Bevis had a sensational all-around outing, finishing with 13 kills, 12 digs and six total blocks.

Karyn Chrisman added five blocks, with Alycia Bradley-Adriano chipping in four kills and four blocks and Malia Kaaiohelo three kills and six blocks.  Dominique Lipari came through with 33 digs and McKenzie Fyfe contributed 14 assists and 12 digs.

UCO won its 27th consecutive set in taking the opener, but Pitt State rebounded to win the next two in putting the Bronchos on the ropes.

Bevis made three kills and combined with Kaaiohelo for a block during a 7-0 run that turned a 13-11 deficit into an 18-13 lead in sparking the fourth-set win that tied the match.

Amanda Desch and Bevis had kills early in the deciding set to stake Central to a quick 3-0 lead, but the Gorillas quickly tied it at 3-all.  Three errors and a Bradley-Adriano block put the Bronchos ahead to stay at 8-4.

Back-to-back Bevis kills had UCO on top 14-10 before PSU scored three straight points.  But, after a Broncho timeout, Bevis and Kaaiohelo teamed up for a block that ended the match.

Central returns to league action this weekend with two more big matches, going to No. 6 Nebraska-Kearney Friday night before moving on to Fort Hays State Saturday afternoon.
