Central Sweeps Missouri Southern

EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma volleyball team swept Missouri Southern Saturday afternoon in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos improved to to 14-2 on the season with the win and are now 2-0 in league play. The win is the 13th consecutive victory for the 15th-ranked Bronchos, and is also the eighth-straight sweep.

Central Oklahoma was led Saturday by senior hitter Karyn Chrisman, who had 11 kills on the day and hit .450 on 20 attacks. Taylor Bevis added 10 kills on 20 attacks, as well as seven digs. Both Malia Kaaiohelo and Jordan Spence had eight kills and combined for five blocks.

Bevis scored the first point of the match to put the Bronchos on the scoreboard, Ericka Scholl followed with a kill of her own, Central never looked back. The first set was never tied as UCO took a 25-16 opening-set win to go up 1-0.

Missouri Southern earned the first point of the second set and held an early lead, but the Bronchos were too much. Kaaiohelo, and fellow sophomore Haley Deschenes, each had four kills in the second set as the Bronchos cruised to a 25-15 win to go up 2-0.

Chrisman, who had five kills in the first set, had five more in the closing set to help the Bronchos to a 25-17 win and yet another sweep.

Scholl excelled in setting up the Broncho offensive attack. The sophomore had 22 assists on the day. McKenzie Fyfe added 14 assists. Dominique Lipari's 11 digs led the way for the Broncho defense. Fyfe added nine to go with Bevis' seven digs.

The Bronchos have a mid-week MIAA matchup on the docket next. Central travels to Pittsburg State on Tuesday before a big road trip next weekend. UCO will play at currently No. 1 rated Nebraska-Kearney next Friday and Fort Hays State next Saturday.
