UCO Opens League Play With Sweep

EDMOND (Sept. 14) – A pair of winning streaks continued for Central Oklahoma Friday night at Hamilton Field House, though one of them required a dramatic comeback.

The No. 15-ranked Bronchos opened Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with a sweep of Southwest Baptist, cruising 25-19, 25-16 in the first two sets before rallying for a 27-25 third-set victory.

It was the 12th straight match win for UCO, which has now taken 23 consecutive sets.  The Bronchos, 13-2 on the year, are back home at 3 p.m. Saturday to host Missouri Southern.

"We used a lot of different lineups and tried to get some of our starters a little rest, so it wasn't very pretty," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "It's good to get everybody some playing time, but they have to be ready to perform when they get on the court."

Senior standout Jordan Spence didn't play at all, while two-time All-American Taylor Bevis played briefly in two sets.  Picking up the slack was freshman Chloe Hancock, who hit .533 with nine kills and just one error in 15 attacks.

Rookie Amanda Desch added eight kills in a balanced attack, while sophomores Malia Kaaiohelo and Haley Deschenes had seven apiece.  Dominique Lipari had another strong defensive outing with 23 digs, Ericka Scholl had 18 assists and three service aces and McKenzie Fyfe added 16 assists and 11 digs.

Central never trailed in the first two sets and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third set behind a pair of aces by Alycia Bradley-Adriano, but the Bearcats came back to tie it at 8-all and eventually surged in front.

SBU build a five-point lead at 23-18 and appeared to have all the momentum in forcing a fourth set, but the Bronchos battled back.

Hancock's kick at the net, an ace by Scholl, Bradley-Adriano's kill down the line and an SBU error cut the deficit to 23-22 before the Bearcats got a kill to go up 24-22.

UCO stayed alive when Bradley-Adriano dug up an attack that dropped over the net for a kill and then Deschenes knocked down a cross-court bullet and made a solo block to put the Bronchos up 25-24.

SBU tied it at 25 and then a pair of freshmen delivered the knockout punch, with back-to-back kills by Hancock and Desch ending the set to Central its seventh straight sweep.
