Central Wins Battle Of Top 20 Teams

DURANT, Okla. (Sept. 1) – Jordan Spence knocked down five kills in a crucial third-set win to spark No. 19-ranked Central Oklahoma past No. 20 Wayne State on the second day of the South Central Classic here Saturday.

The Bronchos took the opening set 25-21 before the Wildcats won the second 25-17 to even the match.  Spence's third-set heroics led to a 26-24 triumph and UCO took the fourth set 25-22 to hand Wayne State its first loss of the season.

It was the fifth straight win for the Bronchos (6-2), who finish the two-day tournament against Southern Arkansas at 7 p.m.

"That was a big win for us," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "It was a battle all the way, but we had several girls really step up and make some huge plays for us in crucial situations."

Spence finished with 10 kills while also blocking seven shots.  Taylor Bevis led Central with 12 kills, 18 digs and three assisted blocks.

Karyn Chrisman added nine kills and Malia Kaaiohelo eight.  Dominique Lipari came up big from her libero spot with 35 digs – the second-most of her stellar three-year career – with Ericka Scholl contributing 28 assists and McKenzie Fyfe 19 assists, nine digs and two aces.

UCO never trailed in the first set, though the Wildcats stayed close throughout.  The Bronchos led 21-20 late before using two Wayne State errors along with a Chrisman kill and combined block by Chrisman and Spence to end it.

Central never recovered in the second set after falling behind early and overcame a seven-point deficit in the third-set victory that turned the match around.

The Bronchos were down 10-3 in the third set and still trailed 22-19 when Spence knocked down back-to-back kills in a 3-0 run that tied it at 22-all.  UCO got kills from Bevis and Amanda Desch in taking the lead before Scholl ended the set with an ace.

Central built an early lead in the third set and then held off the Wildcats down the stretch, getting key kills from Desch, Kaaiohelo and Scholl.
