No. 16 UCO sweeps No. 18 Tarleton

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Aug. 25) – Karyn Chrisman had 10 kills with a robust .714 attack percentage and No. 16-ranked Central Oklahoma rolled over No. 18 Tarleton State in the final match of the Tarleton State Invitational here Saturday.

The Bronchos ended a two-match losing streak in impressive fashion in the battle of returning NCAA Division II national tournament teams, avenging a loss to the TexAnns in this event last year with a 25-23, 25-19, 25-19 sweep.

"I was really proud of the way our players responded after two tough losses," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We came out really focused and performed at a high level throughout the match.

"We had an up-and-down weekend, but I think we learned a lot about what we need to do moving forward."

Chrisman had 10 kills in just 14 attacks with no errors to lead a Central offense that hit .304 for the match.  The Bronchos had 49 kills and just 14 miscues in 115 attempts.

All-American Taylor Bevis -- who was named to the all-tournament team -- had a team-high 14 kills to go along with eight digs and three assisted blocks.  Haley Deschenes had nine kills and Malia Kaaiohelo hit .471 with eight kills and no errors in 17 attacks.

UCO also got five kills from Alycia Bradley-Adriano, while Jordan Spence chipped in five total blocks and three kills.  Ericka Scholl dished out 22 assists to go with three service aces and McKenzie Fyfe had a career-high 21 digs along with 19 assists.

No more than three points separated the two teams in the opening set that featured 12 ties and six lead changes.

Kaaiohelo sandwiched kills around a Chrisman smash to break a 14-all deadlock and put the Bronchos ahead for good at 17-14, with Kaaiohelo's kill giving UCO the first-set win.

It was close again in the second set until Bradley-Adriano's kill snapped a 15-all tie, with a Tarleton error and Bevis kill putting Central in control.

There were nine more ties in the third set, with a pair of TexAnn errors giving UCO a 19-17 lead.  Kills by four separate players and a Scholl ace enabled the Bronchos to close out the sweep.

Central returns to action Tuesday, traveling to Shawnee to take on intrastate rival Oklahoma Baptist at 7 p.m.
