Bronchos Sweep Past OBU

SHAWNEE, Okla. (Aug. 28) – Dominique Lipari's opening-set defensive heroics helped Central Oklahoma overcome an early deficit and the No. 19-ranked Bronchos went on to sweep Oklahoma Baptist here Tuesday night at the Noble Complex.

Lipari dug up 14 OBU attacks in the first set alone to prolong several long rallies that ended up in UCO points as the Bronchos claimed a 25-22 win before following with 25-21, 25-20 victories to secure the sweep.

"It wasn't always pretty, but we got the job done," said head coach Edgar Miraku, whose team hit .213 for the match.  "We played well in stretches and did what we needed to do."

Haley Deschenes and Karyn Chrisman had eight kills apiece to lead a balanced attack.  Malia Kaaiohelo and Jordan Spence added six kills each while combining to make just one error in 28 attacks.

Lipari finished with 24 digs, with Ericka Scholl and Taylor Bevis adding 10 each.  Scholl dished out 15 assists and McKenzie Fyfe 14.

Central trailed 8-4 early in the first set, but rallied to tie it at nine, 10 and 11 on consecutive Deschenes kills.  Alycia Bradley-Adriano put the Bronchos on top to stay at 14-13 on a shot down the middle.

Fyfe extended the lead to 21-17 with a short dump over the net, Chrisman's cross-court kill made it 24-21 and the set ended on an OBU attack error.

The Lady Bison led by as many as four several times in the second set, the final time at 15-11.  UCO came back with four straight points to tie it, pulling even at 15-all on a block by Spence and Deschenes.

A Deschenes shot down the middle gave the Bronchos the lead for good at 17-16 and Spence had back-to-back kills to push the advantage to 21-17.

OBU got within 23-21 before consecutive errors gave Central the set and a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

The Bronchos never trailed in the final set, taking a quick 5-2 lead as Chrisman had two kills.  It was 11-6 after a Spence ace and the Lady Bison never got closer than four the rest of the way.

Kaaiohelo's spike at the net pushed UCO's cushion to 22-17, Bevis' ace made it 24-19 and Scholl got the match-ending point on a dump that ended a long rally.

UCO finishes off a season-opening nine-match road trip this weekend, going to Durant, Okla. to play four matches in the South Central Classic Friday and Saturday.
