UCO Rally Falls Short

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Aug. 24) -- Central Oklahoma's dramatic rally fell short here Friday afternoon as the No. 16-ranked Bronchos dropped a thrilling five-set decision to Midwestern State in the Tarleton State Invitational.

UCO lost 25-22, 25-23 in the first two sets to fall in a big hole before rebounding to dominate the next two, winning 25-17 and 25-13.  That set up a fifth-set showdown and the Mustangs scored the final two points to pull out a 17-15 upset.

The Bronchos (1-1) return to action Saturday to face a pair of returning NCAA Division II national tournament teams in Texas A&M-Commerce and the host TexAnns, ranked 18th nationally.

"That was a tough loss," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "I was proud of the way we bounced back after losing the first two sets, but we didn't finish it off.  We have two tough matches tomorrow and just need to focus on those."

Two-time All-American Taylor Bevis led the way for Central, collecting 20 kills.  Haley Deschenes had 10 kills and five assisted blocks, Jordan Spence added nine kills and five solo blocks and Amanda Desch contributed 30 assists, eight kills and seven digs.

Central had a 21-16 lead in the first set before the Mustangs rallied for a 25-22 win and MSU held off UCO's late comeback in the second set to seemingly take control of the match.

But the Bronchos refused to go quietly.

McKenzie Fyfe's service ace sparked a 6-1 run that broke a 4-4 tie in the third set that let to a 25-17 win and Malia Kaaiohelo had two blocks and a kill in an 8-1 spurt that put UCO in control in a fourth-set rout that tied the match.

The dramatic fifth set was close throughout and the Bronchos surged in front 13-11 on Bevis' kill, but two attack errors and an MSU kill gave the Mustangs a 14-13 lead.  Bevis tied it at 14 with a kill and it was deadlocked at 15 after a Kaaiohelo smash, but MSU scored the final two points to secure the upset.
