Bronchos Eliminated From MIAA Tournament

WARRENSBURG, Mo. (May 12) – The offense disappeared and the pitching wore down in Central Oklahoma's ouster from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Postseason Tournament here Saturday night.

The top-seeded Bronchos were held hitless in a 15-0 setback to No. 2 seed Central Missouri, suffering just their second shutout loss of the season.  Eight pitchers teamed up to keep the game close until the Mules exploded for 12 runs in the eighth inning.

UCO dropped to 35-19 in falling out of contention for the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II playoffs that goes to the tournament champion, though the Bronchos are virtually assured of receiving an at-large bid into the 64-team field.

The top eight teams from each of eight regions around the country qualify for the national tournament and UCO was ranked second in this week's Central Region poll.  The field and regional sites will be announced at 9 p.m. Sunday.

"It's a tough way to go out," head coach John Martin said.  "We had to patch things together with our pitching staff and they really competed to give us a chance before it got away from us late.  Offensively we couldn't make anything happen.

"It's tough when you lose your first game in a tournament like this.  I was proud of the way our guys fought and we look forward to seeing what we can do next weekend in the regional."

Central won two elimination games after falling to Northeastern State 4-2 in Thursday's first round, but the Bronchos used 11 pitchers in beating Nebraska-Kearney and NSU to stay alive before sending eight to the mound against UCM.

The Mules scored an unearned run in the top of the first to break on top early and made it 3-0 in the fourth, with three consecutive two-out walks setting up a two-run single.  It stayed that way until the eighth when seven hits, three hit batters and an error turned into a 12-run inning.

The Bronchos didn't have their first baserunner until Caleb Peters drew a lead-off walk in the third.  One-out walks to Paul Kropf and Trae Smith in the fourth represented the first real scoring chance, but a double play wiped that out.

UCO also put two runners on with two outs in the seventh when Taylor Avila was hit by pitch and Peters walked before a foul out ended the inning.
