Bronchos Blank Pitt State

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team opened its three-game Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series with Pittsburg State with a 4-0 win Sunday afternoon.

Originially scheduled to begin Friday, weather has forced numerous changes to the series. The schools are scheduled to play a doubleheader Monday to complete the series.

UCO improved to 26-10 on the season with the win and 18-4 in league play, which is good for first place in the MIAA. Pittsburg State is 22-12 overall and 14-8 in the MIAA.

Ryan Lemoine had a dominant start to pace the Bronchos Sunday. Facing one of the best offensive teams in the MIAA, Lemoine threw six scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and two walks. He struck out five Pitt State batters in the effort.

Paul Kropf gave Lemoine some added support in the top of the fourth inning. After the Bronchos had been retired in order in each of the first three innings, Kropf smacked a solo home run in the fourth to give UCO its first hit of the game and a 1-0 lead.

Central opened things up in the fifth. That started with a leadoff single from Trae Smith. After Anthony Alvarez grounded out with a sacrifice-bunt, Caleb Peters notched the second Broncho bomb of the day, a two-run shot to left field that made it 3-0 UCO.

On the next at bat, Justin Brown reached base on a throwing error by the Pitt State third baseman. He scored two batters later when Kyle Miskovsky singled up the middle. UCO had the bases loaded with two outs, but Dayne Sommer was picked off to end the inning with the Bronchos leading 4-0.

Ben Wusterbarth came on in relief of Lemoine to start the bottom of the seventh inning and made it out of the inning with one strikeout, one hit and one walk. Tyler Culver threw an inning of relief work in the eighth and struck out one of the three batters he faced. He allowed a walk, but also got PSU to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Josh Rutland came on in the ninth to finish the game. He struck out the first batter before getting a ground-out for the second out of the inning. Rutland then K'd the next batter to send UCO to the win.
