Bronchos Split Final Regular Season Twinbill

EDMOND (April 22) – JoBi Heath and Casady Webb drove in two runs apiece to spark a first-game win as Central Oklahoma split a doubleheader with Pittsburg State Sunday afternoon at breezy Broncho Stadium.

Jayden Chestnut had another stout complete-game pitching outing in a 5-1 triumph to open the day, but the Bronchos managed just three hits in the nightcap and dropped a 3-0 decision.

UCO ended the regular season 29-20 and finished third in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association standings at 17-9.  The Bronchos are the No. 3 seed for the eight-team MIAA Post-season Tournament and will meet sixth-seeded Northeastern State in a 5 p.m. first-round game Thursday at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

"We did a lot of good things in the first game," said Cody White, who is now 199-88 in his fifth year at the helm.  "Jayden had great command and was just outstanding.  We hit the ball well, but still left too many runners on and that really hurt us in the second game when we didn't take advantage of some good scoring opportunities.

"It's been an up-and-down year for us, but this team still has a chance to do good things.  I have no doubt that we can win the conference tournament and get into the national tournament and that's what we plan on doing."

UCO racked up 12 hits in the opener and eight of the nine starters had at least one, with Webb, Bailey Thompson, Morgan Heard and Carli Jones collecting two each while Webb and Heath had two RBI apiece.

The Bronchos used sacrifice flies to score their first three runs.

Mo Selman drew a one-out walk in the second and ended up scoring on Thompson's fly ball to left field, with Heath driving in the next two runs.

Heard started the third with a triple down the right field line before scoring on Heath's deep fly out to center field to make it 2-0 and Heath's sinking line drive to right in the fourth plated Thompson, who had led off with a single.

UCO extended its advantage to 5-0 in the fifth on Webb's two-run double to right-center field.  Selman reached on a fielder's choice and Halley Randolph singled to left-center before both raced home on Webb's two-bagger.

Chestnut had another strong outing in moving to 16-5 on the season, allowing just three hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts.  She gave up a double to the first batter of the game, then retired 15 in a row before PSU had a pair of hits in the sixth to score its only run.

The junior standout struck out the side in the top of the seventh to reach double digits for the second time this season and eighth time of her two-year career.

Central stranded nine runners in the second game despite getting just three hits as the Gorillas issued seven walks.

PSU scored an unearned run in the second inning of the nightcap to take a 1-0 lead and stretched that to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.

The Bronchos left the bases full in the second and stranded runners on second and third in the fourth in their best two scoring changes.  Thompson, Randolph and Carrie Abrams had UCO's hits.

Selman had a pair of stellar defensive plays at second base for the Bronchos.  She snared a line drive in the fourth and completed a solo double play by catching a runner off second with a dive to the bag, then made a running over-the-shoulder grab of a pop up to short right-center in the fifth.
