Bronchos Fall In MIAA Tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY (April 26) – If Central Oklahoma is going to win the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Postseason Tournament championship it's going to have to do it the hard way.

The third-seeded Bronchos dropped a 3-1 semifinal decision to No. 7-seed Lindenwood Thursday night at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex and will have to battle their way back through the consolation bracket to continue the season.

UCO (30-21) takes on fifth-seeded Missouri Western (25-28) at 11 a.m. Friday in an elimination game.  The Bronchos will have to win three consolation games Friday and two more Saturday to claim the tournament title.

Central blitzed Northeastern State 12-1 behind a 15-hit attack in its first-round game and then outhit the Lions 8-7, but Lindenwood held on after taking a 3-0 lead in the second inning as the Bronchos stranded 10 runners.

"We had plenty of chances to score and hit the ball hard several times, but Lindenwood made some nice defensive plays," head coach Cody White said.  "This team has had to overcome a lot of things throughout the season with all the injuries we've had and we'll just have to do it again tomorrow.

"It's obviously going to be a tough test, but I have a lot of confidence in this team.  We're just going to take it one game at a time and see what we can do."

Lindenwood scored all three of its runs in the second.  The Lions loaded the bases with two singles and a walk before Ceairra Perez-Lane cleared them with a double down the left field line on a ball that went off the end of the glove of hard-charging left fielder Carrie Abrams.

The Bronchos didn't get on the scoreboard until the fifth when Abrams drew a walk, went to second on a fielder's choice and scored on Mo Selman's double.

UCO threatened to make a dramatic comeback in the bottom of the seventh.  Morgan Heard and JoBi Heath came through with consecutive two-out singles, but Lindenwood caught Selman's drive to right-center field to end the game.

Heath and Selman had two hits apiece to lead UCO's eight-hit attack.

Jayden Chestnut took the tough loss, giving up seven hits and three runs while walking two and striking out four.
