Bronchos Split Twinbill With Cameron

EDMOND (April 10) – Casady Webb had a pair of run-scoring doubles to spark a first-game win and Central Oklahoma split a doubleheader with intrastate rival Cameron Tuesday afternoon at Broncho Stadium.

Jayden Chestnut pitched a complete-game five-hitter to back Webb's offensive outing in a 4-1 opening-game victory that ended CU's six-game winning streak before the Aggies bounced back to take the nightcap 3-0 and hand the Bronchos their first shutout of the season.

"We did some good things in the first game, both offensively and defensively," said head coach Cody White, whose team is now 24-15.  "Jayden threw well and we came out with a good win, but I thought we took a step back in the second game.  We swung at some bad pitches and just didn't play the way we needed to."

Webb's two-hit, two-RBI outing led a 10-hit attack in the opener, with Central also getting two hits from Bailey Thompson and Carrie Abrams.

Chestnut went the distance for the 12th time in 17 starts, scattering five hits and giving up just one run while striking out eight.  The junior standout threw 110 pitches in improving her record to 13-3.

UCO broke on top quickly, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Thompson led off with an infield single, went to third on an error that allowed Abrams to reach base and scored on Morgan Heard's sacrifice fly before JoBi Heath followed with an RBI double to center field.

Cameron scored its only run on a solo home run in the third and nearly tied it in the fourth only to see Abrams make a sensational running catch in deep left-center field to save a run.

The Bronchos made it 3-1 in the fourth when Carli Jones led off with a single through the right side and pinch-runner Janie Abrams scored on Webb's two-out double to left-center.

Central added an insurance run in the fifth and again it was Webb doing the honors.  This time the junior slugger ripped a line-drive double to right-center to plate Lexy Dobson, who had started the inning with a double.

That three-run lead was more than enough for Chestnut.

The Bronchos couldn't generate any offense in the second game, managing six hits in getting blanked for the first time since late last year.  Heard and Dobson had two hits apiece.

Peyton Walker started in the circle and threw four shutout innings before the Aggies broke loose for two runs in the fifth.  Cameron added a solo homer in the seventh to make it 3-0 and UCO had no answer in its final at bat.

The Bronchos return to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action Saturday, hosting Northeastern State at 2 p.m.
