Chestnut No-Hitter Gives UCO A Split With RiverHawks

EDMOND (April 14) – Jayden Chestnut was untouchable in a first-game pitching masterpiece that enabled Central Oklahoma to split a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader with Northeastern State on a cold and blustery Saturday afternoon at Broncho Stadium.

Chestnut retired the final 14 batters she faced and threw the second no-hitter of her two-year UCO career to lead the Bronchos to a 1-0 shutout in the opener before the RiverHawks took the nightcap 8-4.

"Jayden just dominated today," said head coach Cody White, whose team is now 25-16 on the season and 13-5 in league play.  "We made a couple of good defensive plays early and then she just completely shut them down.  Offensively we didn't do a whole lot in either game and that's something we have to get corrected."

Chestnut issued one walk in the first and another in the third before totally overwhelming NSU the rest of the way.  She got help from third baseman JoBi Heath, who made outstanding plays in turning hard-hit balls to the hot corner into groundouts in the second and third innings to keep the no-hitter intact.

It was just the seventh no-hitter since 1994 for a UCO pitcher and the second for Chestnut, who threw a perfect game last year.  The right-handed junior ace struck out seven in a 97-pitch outing, improving to 14-3 with her fourth shutout of the season.

The Bronchos pushed across the only run they needed in the fourth.

Bailey Thompson led off that frame by punching a single to left field, went to second on Carrie Abrams' sacrifice and raced home with the lone score of the game on Morgan Heard's single up the middle.

Thompson finished with two of UCO's four hits.

Central fell behind 6-0 in the second game before finally getting on the scoreboard in the fifth on Abrams' RBI fielder's choice that scored Lexy Dobson, who had started the inning with a double down the left field line.

NSU scored two more in the sixth to make it 8-1 and the Bronchos tried to make things interested in the bottom of the seventh.

Halley Randolph was hit by pitch to lead off the seventh and Mo Selman followed with her fourth home run of the season, this one a drive that just cleared the right field fence to end a nine-game homer drought by the Bronchos.

Thompson tripled to right-center and Abrams drove her home with a double to right-center to make it 8-4 with still no outs, but UCO's next three batters went down in order to end the rally.

Thopmson, Abrams, Selman and Allie Eicher had two hits apiece for the Bronchos.

UCO goes on the road Monday and Tuesday for back-to-back conference doubleheaders at Southwest Baptist and Central Missouri.
