Abrams, Walker Lead UCO Sweep

EDMOND (March 31) – Peyton Walker pitched a one-hit gem in the nightcap, Carrie Abrams paced the offense in both games and Central Oklahoma swept a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader from Lincoln Saturday afternoon at Broncho Stadium.

Abrams had five hits with two triples and drove in five runs on the day as the Bronchos prevailed 7-2 and 8-0, with Walker giving up just one hit and allowing only two base-runners in the five-inning second-game rout.

The wins gave UCO a four-game weekend sweep, improving their record to 23-14 overall and 12-4 in the league.

"We didn't play great, but our pitching was pretty good all day and we did enough on offense," said head coach Cody White, whose pitching staff gave up just five hits in the twinbill.  "Jayden (Chestnut) and Lauren (Gibson) both threw well in the first game and Peyton is really starting to come on as she keeps getting healthy.

"Carrie gave us a big lift offensively with some timely hits.  It was a good weekend for us and should give us some momentum."

Abrams went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two of UCO's seven stolen bases – tied for the second-best single-game total in school history – in the opener before following with a 2-for-3, two-RBI outing in the second game.

Walker, still rounding into form in her third week back after missing six weeks to injury, needed just 53 pitches in the nightcap.  The senior right-hander induced the Blue Tigers into 11 groundouts and retired 11 batters in a row after giving up a two-out single in the first inning until LU's only other base-runner reached on a one-out error in the fifth.

Central grabbed a 2-0 lead in its first at bat of the second game.  Bailey Thompson led off with an infield single and Abrams followed with an RBI triple to right-center before scoring on Morgan Heard's sacrifice fly.

The Bronchos extended their lead to 6-0 in the second, with JoBi Heath's three-run double off the center field fence the big blow.  Abrams added an RBI single.

UCO's final two runs came in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Tori Huslig and Lexy Dobson.  It was Huslig's first collegiate hit in just her third at bat of the season as the freshman came in as a pinch-hitter and ripped the first pitch she saw to left-center field to score Heard, who had reached on a one-out single.

Abrams and Heath had two hits apiece to lead a 10-hit attack.

The Bronchos jumped on top early in the first game as well.

Thompson started a 3-for-3 outing with a lead-off bunt single in the first, going to second on the play.  She took third on Abrams' bunt base hit and trotted home on Heard's sacrifice fly to stake UCO to an early 1-0 lead.

That became a 5-0 cushion in the second as Abrams ripped a three-run triple and Heard added an RBI single.

The Bronchos loaded the bases on Carli Jones' one-out walk and back-to-back two-out singles by Casady Webb and Thompson before Abrams cleared them with a drive over the right fielder's head.  Heard followed with a line drive single to left.

Thompson got UCO going again in the fourth with a lead-off single, went to second on Abrams' second bunt hit of the game and scored on another Heard sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.

Lincoln -- limited to one hit in the first four innings -- broke through with three doubles in the fifth to push across two runs and get within 6-2.

The Bronchos got a run back in the bottom of that frame.  Jones singled, then pinch-runner Janie Abrams stole second before scoring on Webb's bloop single to center field.

UCO finished with 10 hits, getting three apiece from Thompson and Abrams and two from Webb.  Thompson also scored three runs.

Chestnut picked up the pitching win, giving up four hits and two runs in five innings.  The junior standout walked two and struck out seven – including six straight during one stretch – in moving to 12-3 on the season.

Gibson finished the game, throwing two no-hit innings while striking out three.

Heath at third, Heard at shortstop and Webb at second base all made stellar defensive plays to keep Lincoln batters off the base-paths.

The Bronchos continue league play next weekend, going to Southwest Baptist Friday and Central Missouri Saturday.
