Bronchos Blank Riverhawks

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma shut out intra-state rival Northeastern State 6-0 Tuesday afternoon in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association affair at Wendell Simmons Field. The Bronchos improved to 22-9 with the win and 14-3 in league play. Northeastern State is 16-11 overall and 7-7 in the MIAA.

"That was a good win for us," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Northeastern is a really good team with a good pitching staff and they came in here not only well rested, but on a win streak. That's good to beat a team in that situation. It will help us with our confidence."

Tyler Culver got the start for the Bronchos Tuesday and was magnificent. The senior from Pawhuska, Okla. struck out the side in the top of the first and never let up. He finished with 11 strikeouts after seven innings of work, allowing just two hits and three walks. Culver improved to 5-0 on the season with the win.

Ben Wusterbarth also struck out two in an inning of relief effort and Austin Lambright struck one in the ninth – the final batter – to close the game the way Culver started it.

Jake Dyer led the charge on offense. The senior right fielder from Oklahoma City finished 4-for-4 with three doubles and a single. He scored two runs and had two runs batted in.

The first RBI put the first run on the board. In the bottom of the second, Dyer doubled down the right field line and scored Bryant Klusener, who singled in the previous at bat, to give UCO a 1-0 lead. Dyer then scored himself when Justin Brown hit an RBI single to center field that made it 2-0, Bronchos.

UCO scored its other four runs in a strange bottom of the sixth.

Xavier Freeman led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a throwing error by the NSU shortstop as Bryant Klusener reached on a fielder's choice. Dyer then singled to score Freeman and Klusener came around too when the left fielder made an error himself. That made it 4-0 UCO.

After Dyer moved over to third on a passed ball, and Carson Green walked, Dyer scored to make it 5-0 when Brown reached on a fielder's choice. The pitcher tried to throw home and get Dyer but threw the ball way right of the catcher.

Green scored the final run when Miskovsky grounded out to shortstop on the next at bat.

Brown went 3-for-4 on the day with two RBIs. Kropf, Freeman, and Klusener gathered the other Bronchos hits.

Both Brown (three) and Dyer (four) out-hit Northeastern State, which finished with two on the day – a season-low for the Broncho pitching staff.

Central Oklahoma continues its long homestand this weekend, hosting Lindenwood in a three-game MIAA series beginning Thursday at 3 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field.
