Bronchos Drop Two At Northwest Missouri

MARYVILLE, MO. (March 22) – Central Oklahoma's road woes continued here Thursday as the Bronchos dropped a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader to Northwest Missouri.

UCO – which lost four of five games in Emporia, Kan. last weekend at the Emporia State Classic – fell 3-2 in the opener on a walk-off solo home run before losing 7-4 in the nightcap.

The first-game loss was Central's third last-inning setback in its last five games, with the Bearcats winning when what appeared to be a routine fly ball to right field was carried over the fence by a strong north wind.  The Bronchos fell to 18-13 on the season and 7-3 in league play, while NWMSU improved to 14-8 and 5-1.

"We're just not getting it done right now," head coach Cody White said.  "Tomorrow's a new day, so we have to put this behind us and get ready to go again."

UCO plays another league twinbill Friday morning, moving on to St. Joseph, Mo. to face Missouri Western at 10 a.m. in games that have been moved up by the threat of rain.

Starting pitcher Lauren Gibson gave up six hits in the first two innings of the opener before settling down, with five of those coming in the second as NWMSU scored twice to take the early lead.  Second baseman Mo Selman prevented additional damage with a superb over-the-shoulder catch in short right field with the bases loaded for the final out.

The Bronchos pushed across their only two runs of the game in the fourth to tie it.

Carrie Abrams started the frame with an infield single and went to third on Morgan Heard's double to the left-center field gap before scoring on JoBi Heath's single through the left side, with an error on the play also allowing Heard to cross the plate.

Neither team threatened again until the sixth when the Bearcats drew a two-out walk and followed with a double to put runners on second and third.  Peyton Walker came on to get a grounder back to the circle for the third out and escape the jam.

Central went down in order in the top of the seventh and then NWMSU won it with the wind-aided homer.

The Bronchos managed just five hits, which the Bearcats ended with nine.

The Bearcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap with a solo homer and two bloop RBI hits and it stayed that way until the fifth.

UCO got back in the game in that frame when Jones led off with a single up the middle and Casady Webb came through an out later with a massive two-run homer to left field that made it 3-2.

NWMSU answered right back in the bottom of the fifth with four runs to push its lead to 7-2 and the Bronchos could manage just solo runs in the sixth and seventh.

Jones had a run-scoring single in the sixth and Webb belted her second homer of the game in the seventh, this one a line-drive shot to left-center field.

The Bronchos finished with eight hits, getting two each from Jones and Webb.
