UCO Splits Doubleheader With Griffons

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (March 23) – Mo Selman's seventh-inning run-scoring single gave Central Oklahoma a 3-2 first-game win and the Bronchos split a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader with Missouri Western here Friday.

UCO overcame an early 4-0 deficit in the nightcap, but ended up losing a tough 5-4 decision.  The defending conference champion Bronchos are now 19-14 overall and 8-4 in the league.

"I thought we showed a lot more grit and fight today," head coach Cody White said.  "We battled hard, gave ourselves a chance to win both games and just came up a little short in the second one."

Lexy Dobson started UCO's game-winning rally in the seventh inning of the opener with a lead-off infield single before moving to second on Tori Ritz's sacrifice bunt.  Dobson stayed at second on a groundout, then raced home with the tie-breaking run on Selman's bloop hit to left field.

Lauren Gibson came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh and put MWSU down in order to earn her second save of the season.  Peyton Walker – who just returned to action last weekend after missing six weeks with injury – went a season-high six inning to pick up the win, scattering seven hits while walking just one.

UCO took a 1-0 lead in the third when Casady Webb led off with a double down the left field line, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Selman's sacrifice fly.

The Bronchos made it 2-0 in the sixth on JoBi Heath's two-out single up the middle that plated Morgan Heard, who had singled and stolen second.

MWSU tied it in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run and would have scored another if not for Dobson's spectacular diving catch in right field on a sinking line drive for the third out.

UCO's defense came through two other times earlier in the game to keep the Griffons scoreless.

MWSU had runners on second and third with one out in the fourth, but the Bronchos got of the jam when shortstop Morgan Heard made back-to-back plays on hard-hit ground balls.

The Griffons threatened again the next inning when they put runners on the corners with one out.  This time Walker escaped the jam by getting a force out at second on a grounder back to the circle before another groundout ended the inning.

MWSU scored four times in the second inning of the nightcap to grab a 4-0 lead, with the Bronchos getting two runs in each of the next two innings to pull even.

Central loaded the bases with no outs in the third on singles by Selman and Carrie Abrams along with a walk to Bailey Thompson.  Heard and JoBi Heath came through with back-to-back sacrifice flies to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Dobson and Webb started the fourth with consecutive base hits and Ritz moved them up with a sacrifice bunt before both scored on Thompson's high fly ball to center field that dropped in for a double.

NWMSU broke the deadlock with a run in the bottom of the fifth and held on.

The Bronchos had several good scoring chances the rest of the way – putting two runners on with one out in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings – but couldn't push across another run.

UCO finished with eight hits, getting one each from eight different players.

The Bronchos return home next weekend to host Lindenwood and Lincoln for back-to-back MIAA doubleheaders.
