Bronchos Finish Emporia Tourney With Win

EMPORIA, Kan. (March 18) – JoBi Heath drove in three runs and Peyton Walker came through with a clutch relief outing to propel Central Oklahoma past Augustana 7-5 here Sunday on the final day of Emporia State Softball Classic here Sunday.

Heath's two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning gave the Bronchos a commanding 7-0 lead, but the Vikings rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth and had two runners on when Walker took over in the pitching circle.

The senior right-hander, who just returned to action this weekend after having missed six weeks to a knee injury, got a groundout to end Augie's sixth-inning threat.  Walker gave up a one-out single in the seventh before inducing a game-ending double play to pick up her first save of the season.

UCO ended a four-game losing streak – its longest since a similar skid in 2011 – and improved to 18-11 by taking the final game of the three-day event.  Augie fell to 18-6.

"That was a big win for us," head coach Cody White said.  "We didn't have a very good weekend and I was proud of the way we came out and competed today.  We still made a few mistakes, but we found a way to get out of there with a win over a really good team."

Central snapped a scoreless deadlock with three unearned runs in the third, then added two in the fifth and two in the sixth to open up its sizeable lead.

Halley Randolph reached on an error to open the third, went to second on Casady Webb's sacrifice bunt and took third on a fielder's choice that allowed Bailey Thompson to reach base.  Morgan Heard ripped a two-out triple to push across the first two runs before Heath followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0.

Heard led off the fifth with a double, Heath walked and Allie Eicher reached on an error to load the bases for Lexy Dobson, who delivered a run-scoring single up the middle.  Heath was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice grounder that left the bases loaded and Randolph followed with a sacrifice fly to bump the lead to 5-0.

That became a 7-0 advantage in the sixth when Heard drew a two-out walk and Heath followed with her sixth homer of the season.

Augie took advantage of four hits and two errors to push across five runs in the bottom of the sixth to get back in it, but Walker came in to shut down the comeback and UCO held on for the win.

The Bronchos managed seven hits, getting two apiece from Heard, Heath and Dobson.

UCO resumes Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play Friday with a doubleheader at Northwest Missouri before moving on to Missouri Western for another twinbill the next day.
