UCO Falls Twice In Emporia

EMPORIA, Kan. (March 17) – Central Oklahoma lost a second straight seventh-inning heartbreaker and dropped two more games on the second day of Emporia State Softball Classic here Saturday.

The Bronchos fell to Minnesota-Duluth 5-4 in their opener when the Bulldogs scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and then lost a 10-2 run-rule decision to defending national champion and No. 10-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato.

UCO, which lost 7-1 and 10-9 games Friday, finishes the three-day event Sunday with a 10 a.m. contest against Augustana.  The Bronchos are 17-11 on the season.

"We didn't play very well in either game and are just struggling right now," head coach Cody White said.  "We're making mistakes in every phase of the game and it's hard to win that way.  Hopefully we can put it behind us and finish on a good note tomorrow."

Central trailed 3-1 after three innings of the first game against UMD, but rallied to tie it in the fourth when Lexy Dobson had a one-out double and Mo Selman came through an out later with a two-run home run to center field.

Bailey Thompson led off the fifth with a bunt single and eventually scored on JoBi Heath's two-out single to left field to give the Bronchos a 4-3 lead, but that didn't last long.

The Bulldogs tied it with a run in the bottom of the fifth and then won it in the seventh with a walk and back-to-back base hits.

Thompson went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead a nine-hit attack, while Carrie Abrams had two hits.

The Bronchos trailed just 2-1 after two innings against MSU-Mankato before the Mavericks took control with a four-run third, then added two runs in the fourth and sixth innings to end the game on the eight-run rule.

UCO managed five hits, with the runs coming on solo homers by Heath and Allie
Eicher.
