Bronchos Drop Two In Kansas

EMPORIA, Kan. (March 16) – Two errors that led to a four-run seventh-inning rally resulted in a disappointing 10-9 setback for Central Oklahoma in the second game of Emporia State Softball Classic here Friday.

The Bronchos lost a 7-1 decision to No. 7-ranked Winona State in their first game and were poised for a bounce-back win over Minot State after building a 9-2 fifth-inning lead.  But the Beavers got back in the game with four runs in the sixth and took the lead with four more in the seventh after back-to-back one-out errors kept the inning alive.

UCO fell to 17-9 with the two losses and will look to rebound Saturday with games against Minnesota-Duluth at 12 p.m. and defending national champion Minnesota State-Mankato at 2.  The Bronchos finish the three-day event Sunday with a 10 a.m. contest against Augustana.

"It wasn't a good day," head coach Cody White said.  "We just didn't do the things you need to do to win.  We made mistakes in all areas of the game and it cost us.  But tomorrow's a new day and I'm confident our girls will come out ready to play."

Central was outhit 12-6 in the opening-day loss to Winona State, which won its 17th straight game and improved to 20-2.  JoBi Heath and Carli Jones had two hits apiece for the Bronchos.

UCO trailed Minot State 2-1 going into the bottom of the third, but grabbed the lead with three runs in that frame and appeared to take control with a five-run volley in the fifth.

Lexy Dobson had a run-scoring single and Allie Eicher a sacrifice fly to highlight the third, while Mo Selman's three-run home run keyed the fifth-inning uprising that gave the Bronchos a seemingly safe 9-2 lead.

But it wasn't.

The Beavers had a three-run homer in the sixth in cutting UCO's lead to 9-6, then took advantage of the early errors in the seventh to push across four unearned runs in the seventh to go ahead.

The Bronchos tried to rally in their final at bat and had runners at second and third with two outs, but Morgan Heard's hard-hit line-drive to center field was caught for the final out.

UCO banged out 14 hits in the contest, getting three from Dobson.  Eicher, Selman and Carrie Abrams had two hits each, with Eicher driving in three runs.

Minot had three homers among its nine hits and scored five unearned runs in the game as the Bronchos committed four errors.
