UCO Tames Tigers

EDMOND (Feb. 10) – Four different players scored in a game-opening 10-0 scoring spurt that put Central Oklahoma in quick command and the Bronchos went on to wallop Fort Hays State 81-57 Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

UCO never trailed after the fast start and dominated the glass in claiming its third straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association victory.  The Bronchos improved to 17-7 on the season and 10-5 in the league while dropping FHSU to 14-10 and 7-8.

"We started out quick and had some good looks on shots that didn't go in and that affected our defensive play," said third-year head coach Tom Hankins, who picked up his 50th career win with the Bronchos.  "I thought that we had a great second half.  We came out and made some shots and pulled away."

Central outrebounded the Tigers 42-23 as the inside duo of Corbin Byford and Jake Hammond combined for 22 boards -- including 10 on the offensive end – and spearheaded a big 38-16 advantage in points in the paint.

Byford finished with 22 points, 13 rebounds and a blocked shot, while Hammond came up one carom short of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds to go with two blocks.

Byford also did most of the defensive work on FHSU leading scorer Hadley Gillum, who went 3-of-10 from the field in scoring just six points – 11.3 under his average – before fouling out.

The Bronchos also got 12 points, six rebounds and two steals from Jordan HemphillMarqueese Grayson chipped in 10 points and five assists, with Josh Holliday adding eight points and three assists.

UCO jumped on top right out of the gate, getting four points from Hammond and two each from Byford, Hemphill and Johnson in taking a 10-0 lead.

It was 14-2 after a Hemphill layup and the Bronchos appeared on cruise control, but FHSU heated up and went on a 14-4 run to get within a bucket at 18-16.  The rest of the half was close and UCO took a 34-30 edge into intermission.

The Bronchos were up by five (43-38) early in the second half before getting two Hemphill layups and three points from Hammond in a 7-0 spurt that pushed the lead to double digits at 50-38.

The Tigers got no closer than nine the rest of the way and Central ended the game with a 15-2 run to complete the rout.

UCO heads north next week for its final two conference road games of the regular season, taking on Nebraska-Kearney Thursday before getting a rematch with the Tigers Saturday.
