Cold-shooting UCO Falls To Lopers

KEARNEY, Neb. (Feb. 15) – Cold-shooting Central Oklahoma fell behind early and never recovered in dropping an 87-66 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association decision to Nebraska-Kearney here Thursday night.

The Bronchos missed five shots in a row during one early stretch as an 8-all tie turned into a 14-8 deficit and shot just 27.6 percent (8-of-29) – going 0-of-8 from 3-point range -- in the first half to fall behind by double digs in having a three-game winning streak snapped.

UCO, which beat the Lopers 77-69 at home last Thursday, fell to 17-8 on the season and 10-6 in the league.  The Bronchos are back in action Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. contest at Fort Hays State.

"We just couldn't make any shots early and that got us in a bind," head coach Tom Hankins said.  "We got a lot of good looks, but didn't take advantage.  It's a very disappointing loss, but all we can do is put it behind us and get ready for Saturday."

Jake Hammond scored four early points and Central was tied 8-8 five minutes into the game, but the Lopers scored six unanswered points to take the lead for good at 14-8 as the Bronchos missed five straight shots.

UCO clawed within two (22-20) on two Phabian Glasco free throws with 5:05 left, but the Bronchos hit just 1-of-7 field goal tries the rest of the half and UNK closed with a 14-5 run to take a 36-25 lead into the break.

Corbin Byford's layup and a Jordan Hemphill jumper to open the second half had UCO within 36-29.  The Lopers responded with an 11-0 run – making three straight 3-pointers – to go up 47-29 and the Bronchos never threatened again.

Central shot just 36.8 percent (21-of-57) from the field for the game and made only 5-of-22 attempts (22.7 percent) from beyond the arc.  UNK downed 21-of-57 shots (57.1 percent), making 13 treys, and also outrebounded the Bronchos 36-26.

Josh Holliday was the lone bright spot for UCO, canning 6-of-8 shots with five 3-pointers in scoring a season-high 20 points.  He was the only player in double figures for the Bronchos.

Hammond finished with nine points and Hemphill added eight. Marqueese Grayson managed just six points after having averaged more than 18 in the previous six games and Byford was held to four points while limited to 17 minutes because of foul trouble.
