Bronchos Get Past MWSU

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (Oct. 6) – Taylor Bevis and Jordan Spence had four kills apiece in the decisive fifth set to lift No. 19-ranked Central Oklahoma past Missouri Western here Saturday afternoon.

It was the second straight five-set road thriller for the Bronchos, who prevailed 25-22, 21-15, 25-12, 23-25, 15-5 in improving to 19-4 on the season and 7-2 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

"It was a hard match, but we found a way to come out on top," said head coach Edgar Miraku, whose team beat Northwest Missouri in five sets Friday night.  "We had a hard match last night that took a lot out of our girls and I'm really proud of the way we responded in tough conditions today."

Taylor Bevis led UCO with her second consecutive 20-plus kill outing, piling up 22 kills with 10 digs.  Malia Kaaiohelo and Spence dominated at the net for the second straight match as Kaaiohelo hit .417 with 13 kills and three blocks while Spence hit .323 with 12 kills and seven blocks.

Karyn Chrisman added 11 kills, McKenzie Fyfe contributed 27 assists and a career-high 26 digs and Dominique Lipari had a match-leading 33 digs.

The teams split the first four sets to force the fifth set, but Central took quick control in the match-decider.

MWSU scored the first point before the Bronchos responded.  Bevis had two kills while Chrisman and Spence had one apiece in a 5-0 run that made it 5-1 and UCO coasted in from there.

Central was down 5-0 and 10-4 in the opening set, but rebounded to take the 25-22 win, getting a block and kill from Spence down the stretch.

The Griffons came back with the second-set win to tie the match and it was close in the third set before three straight Kaaiohelo kills sparked a 9-0 run that turned a 6-4 lead into a 13-4 cushion to put UCO in control.

MWSU rebounded with the fourth-set win to set up the finish that the Bronchos dominated.

UCO returns home Friday to start a three-game homestand against Central Missouri.
