UCO Outlasts Jennies

EDMOND (Oct. 12) – For the third straight match Central Oklahoma was forced to five sets.  And for the third consecutive time the No. 17-ranked Bronchos prevailed, this time in a fierce battle with No. 16 Central Missouri.

UCO pulled out a tense 18-16 decision in the decisive set to survive a two-hour, 13-minute thriller Friday night at Hamilton Field House.  The Jennies won the first (25-18) and third sets (26-24), while the Bronchos took the second (25-19) and fourth (25-15) in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association showdown.

"That was a struggle," said head coach Edgar Miraku of a match that featured 38 ties and 17 lead changes.  "Both teams played really hard and it just went back-and-forth all night.  I was really proud of the way we kept our poise after getting down in the fifth set.  We made some big plays when we needed them and came out with a great win."

UCO fell behind 3-0 in the fifth set and was down 7-4 before rallying with a 4-0 run to go ahead 8-7, getting kills from Taylor Bevis and Karyn Chrisman.

The teams traded blows the rest of the way, with the Bronchos staving off match point down 14-13 on freshman Alycia Bradley-Adriano's cross-court kill.  UCO then went up 15-14 and 16-15 only to see the Jennies pull even.

Finally the Bronchos took the lead for good at 17-16 on a combined block by Bevis and Malia Kaaiohelo before a Central Missouri attack error ended the drama.

Bevis had a match-high 15 kills to go along with 18 digs and three assisted blocks to lead UCO.  Jordan Spence hit .303 with 11 kills and four total blocks and Bradley-Adriano hit .348 with a career-best 10 kills.

The Bronchos also got nine kills and four blocks from Kaaiohelo and seven kills from Amanda Desch.  The setter duo of Ericka Scholl and McKenzie Fyfe combined for 46 assists and 24 digs, while Dominique Lipari came up big with 27 digs and two service aces.

UCO led 14-12 in the first set only to see the Jennies finish with a 13-4 run to take the win and UCM then jumped on top 4-0 to start the second.

The Bronchos stayed patient and finally took their first lead at 19-18 on a Lipari ace.  Another ace, this time by Desch, and consecutive kills by Bradley-Adriano allowed UCO to finish out the set and even the match.

Central Missouri scored the final two points of the third set to secure that 26-24 win and put the Bronchos on their heels, but UCO responded with a dominating fourth-set performance.  Bevis, Bradley-Adriano and Desch had three kills apiece in a 10-point rout that set up the deciding fifth set.

The Bronchos, now 20-4 on the season and 8-2 in league play, are back in action Saturday with a 3 p.m. home match against
Lindenwood.
