UCO Sweeps Tigers On Senior Day

EDMOND (Oct. 27) – Karyn Chrisman and Malia Kaaiohelo had five kills apiece to spark a third-set rally that enabled Central Oklahoma to finish off a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association sweep of Fort Hays State Saturday at Hamilton Field House.

The No. 14-ranked Bronchos celebrated Senior Day with a 25-16, 25-18, 25-21 triumph on the final regular season home match of the season in bouncing back from Friday night's tough loss to No. 6-rated Nebraska-Kearney.

"Senior Day is hard sometimes with all the emotions involved, but our seniors did a great job getting the team ready and focusing on the match," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We played well at times and I was proud of the way we responded after last night's loss."

It was the final regular season home appearance for Chrisman, Taylor Bevis, McKenzie Fyfe and Jordan Spence, who all made big contributions in the win.

Chrisman finished with a team-high 11 kills and hit .360, committing just two errors in 25 attacks while adding three assisted blocks.  Spence hit .353 with six kills and four assisted blocks, Bevis had seven kills and 15 digs and Fyfe chipped in 15 assists, 10 digs and two service aces.

Kaaiohelo ended up with nine kills and had just one miscue in 19 attempts in hitting .421.  Dominique Lipari had 16 digs.

Lipari had seven of those digs in the first set and the Bronchos never trailed in jumping out to a quick lead in the match.

FHSU's only lead in the second set came at 2-1, with two Bevis kills, a Chrisman kill and Ericka Scholl ace leading a 5-0 run that put UCO up 6-2 and the Bronchos coasted in from there.

The third set was a battle throughout, with 12 ties and eight lead changes.

UCO outscored the Tigers 7-2 down the stretch to turn a 19-18 deficit into its 20th sweep of the season.  Kaaiohelo had five kills in just seven attacks and Chrisman five kills in 11 attempts in the set, with Chrisman's hard shot down the middle finishing it off.

The Bronchos finish the regular season on the road next weekend, going to Emporia State Friday and No. 7 Washburn Saturday.
