No. 17 UCO Stuns No. 11 Ichabods

TOPEKA, Kan. (Nov. 2) – Amanda Desch sparked a first-set run that put Central Oklahoma in control and the No. 17-ranked Bronchos went on to a stunning road rout of No. 11 Washburn Friday night.

The Ichabods led 8-2 in the opening set before a Desch kill ignited an 8-0 scoring spurt that gave UCO the lead and the Bronchos went on to an overwhelming 25-18, 25-14, 25-20 romp for their 21st sweep of the season.

Central improved to 26-5 on the season and 14-3 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play while dropping the Ichabods to 26-3 and 14-3.  The Bronchos end the regular season Saturday with a 7 p.m. match at Emporia State.

"I'm so proud of the way we played tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We got down early, but the girls didn't get rattled and responded like the champions they are.  It was a great win on the road against a really good team."

The Ichabods, who beat UCO in four sets on Sept. 28 in Edmond, took early control in the first set with the quick 8-2 lead only to see the Bronchos respond.

Desch's kill got UCO started, with Jordan Spence adding two blocks and McKenzie Fyfe a service ace as the Bronchos surged in front 10-8.  It was tied at 14-all before Malia Kaaiohelo had a kill and block to go along with a Taylor Bevis ace and another Desch kill during a 5-0 run that made it 19-14.

Bevis ended the set with a kill and the Bronchos then took control early in the second, jumping out to a 6-1 lead behind two Bevis kills.  It was 11-4 after a Spence slam dunk at the net and UCO coasted in from there.

Central never trailed in the third set after Bevis and Kaaiohelo teamed up for back-to-back blocks to go up 2-0.  Washburn was still within two at 19-17, but Kaaiohelo had two kills the rest of the way as the Bronchos finished off the big win.

UCO hit .333 for the match, collecting 45 kills against 10 errors in 105 attacks while holding the Ichabods to .087 hitting.

Spence led a balanced attack with 10 kills and two errors in 19 attempts for a .421 attack percentage to go with five assisted blocks.  Kaaiohelo hit .462 with eight kills and had three blocks.

Bevis and Chrisman contributed seven kills apiece, with Desch adding six kills and Haley Deschenes five kills and five assisted blocks.  Dominique Lipari led the team in digs with 14.
