Bronchos Steamroll Pitt State

EDMOND (Oct. 16) – Five players had six-plus kills in a balanced attack that carried Central Oklahoma to a runaway sweep of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Pittsburg State Tuesday night at Hamilton Field House.

The No. 15-ranked Bronchos never trailed in any of the three sets in rolling to a 25-20, 25-13, 25-17 rout for their sixth straight win.  UCO needed five sets to subdue the Gorillas in the two teams' first meeting on Sept. 18 in Pittsburg, Kan., but this one was never a contest.

It was the 17th sweep of the season – including the ninth in 10 home wins – for the Bronchos, who improved to 22-4 overall and 10-2 in the conference.  It was also Central's 12th consecutive victory over PSU.

"We did a great job spreading things around offensively and played pretty well overall," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We had a real battle with Pitt the first time around and the girls came out really focused tonight."

Taylor Bevis paced UCO's offensive attack with nine kills, while Haley Deschenes hit .462 with seven kills and one error in 13 attacks.  Amanda Desch and Jordan Spence both hit .667 as each had six kills and no miscues in nine tries.

Malia Kaaiohelo also had six kills, hitting .417 in the process, and added four blocks.  Ericka Scholl handed out 20 assists to go with two service aces and Dominique Lipari finished with a match-high 14 digs.

The only tie in the match – other than 0-0 – came at 1-1 in the opening set, with two PSU errors quickly giving the Bronchos a 3-1 lead.  UCO soon pushed its advantage to 12-5 and coasted in from there.

McKenzie Fyfe was on serve to open the second set and Central zipped to an 8-0 lead behind two Deschenes kills and a Fyfe ace.  Deschenes finished with five kills and Spence four in the easy win.

It was more of the same in the third set as the Bronchos scored the first nine points, eight of those on Scholl's serve.  Bevis and Kaaiohelo had two kills each and Scholl two aces in that opening spurt and UCO breezed in to finish off the sweep.

Central goes on the road for two league matches this weekend, playing at Southwest Baptist Friday and Missouri Southern Saturday.
