Bronchos Ace Road Opener

BOLIVAR, Mo. (Oct. 19) – Callie Bangasser and McKenzie Fyfe combined for eight of Central Oklahoma's season-high 12 service aces as the No. 15-ranked Bronchos trounced Southwest Baptist Friday night.

UCO strolled past the Bearcats 25-20, 25-12, 25-19 for their 18th sweep of the season.  It was also the seventh straight victory for the Bronchos, who moved to 23-4 overall and 11-2 in the league with their third win over the season – and third sweep – of SBU.

"We got off to a great start in the first set and played a pretty good match," said head coach Edgar Miraku, whose team moves on to Joplin, Mo. Saturday to face Missouri Southern at 12 p.m.  "Any win on the road in this conference is big, so I'm happy with our performance and hopefully we can keep it up tomorrow."

Bangasser and Fyfe each had a career-high four aces for Central, which hit a blistering .340 in the match with 45 kills and just 13 errors in 94 attacks.

Taylor Bevis hit .625 with 11 kills and one miscue in 16 attempts, while Jordan Spence hit .467 with nine kills and two errors in 15 tries.  Haley Deschenes hit .500 with seven kills and Alycia Bradley-Adriano added five kills.

Ericka Scholl piled up 33 assists and Dominique Lipari had a match-high 14 digs along with three aces.

The Bronchos took charge immediately in the opening set, bolting to an 8-1 lead as Deschenes had three kills and Lipari a pair of aces.  It was an 11-point advantage at 15-4 after an SBU error and UCO was still in control at 18-9 following another miscue.

But the Bearcats showed life after that, reeling off seven unanswered points to pull within 18-16 and force a Central timeout.  It was a 22-20 lead when the Bronchos closed it out, getting a Bevis kill before back-to-back errors ended the set.

UCO was down 2-1 in the second set when an Amanda Desch kill ignited a 9-0 spurt that put the Bronchos ahead 10-2.  Spence had three of her five kills in the set during in that span and the Bronchos coasted in from there.

The Bearcats came out strong in the third set trying to stay alive and jumped ahead 4-1 only to have UCO answer in a dominating way behind the serving of Bangasser and Fyfe.

Bangasser knocked down three aces and Fyfe two during a devastating 14-1 run that gave the Bronchos a 15-5 cushion.  SBU tried to rally and got within four points at 23-18 before a Bearcat error and Lauren Jenkins' kill ended the set to complete the sweep.
