Bronchos Tame Lions

EDMOND (Oct. 13) – Haley Deschenes had six kills to spark a first-set win, Taylor Bevis collected six kills in a tight second-set victory and Central Oklahoma went on to take out Lindenwood Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The No. 17-ranked Bronchos collected their 16th sweep of the season with a 25-18, 25-23, 25-19 triumph, improving to 21-4 on the season.  It was the fifth straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association win for UCO, now 9-2 in the league.

Deschenes finished with a match-high 13 kills to go along with two blocks, while Bevis had 11 kills and nine digs.  Karyn Chrisman added eight kills and Amanda Desch five kills with three assisted blocks.

Central also got three kills and five total blocks from Malia KaaioheloMcKenzie Fyfe and Ericka Scholl had 16 assists apiece, with Dominique Lipari chipping in 15 digs.

"Last night's match took a lot out of us and we looked tired at times," said head coach Edgar Miraku, whose team edged No. 16 Central Missouri in a five-set thriller Friday night. "Lindenwood is probably the best blocking team in the conference and that gave us some problems, but we got the job done."

The Lions – averaging a league-leading 2.33 blocks per set -- finished with 12 team blocks in that match, though it didn't matter in the end.

The two teams battled back-and-forth most of the first set, which saw nine ties and two lead changes.  Deschenes' solo block put UCO ahead for good at 18-17 and the sophomore outside hitter followed with a kill as the Bronchos finished the set with an 8-1 run to take the win.

Spence's service ace, a Bevis kill and Kaaiohelo block sparked Central to a quick 5-0 lead in the second set and it was a 19-10 advantage when Lindenwood rallied.  The Lions roared back to within 21-19 and it was 24-23 when Bevis' rocket shot down the middle ended it.

Chrisman had four kills and Kaaiohelo all three of hers in the third set as the Bronchos pulled away from an early 7-7 tie to close out the match.

UCO finishes off its three-match
homestand Tuesday, hosting Pittsburg State at 7 p.m.
