Bronchos earn spot in MIAA Championship

JOPLIN, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team is playing in its first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championship Sunday after beating Missouri Western 8-2 Sunday morning.

The Bronchos will play the winner of Missouri Southern – the host of the MIAA Postseason tournament – and Lindenwood Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Warren Turner Field.

UCO's offense got to work early and often Sunday morning, scoring one run in the second inning, and three more in the third inning to build a 4-0 lead. The Bronchos led 8-1 heading into the ninth as they kept the offense working throughout the day.

"I'm proud of the way our guys swung the bat today," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We got off to a good start, and the guys kept it up."

UCO scattered 12 hits against Missouri Western. Korey Floyd and Anthony Alvarez each had three hits to lead the way. Dayne Sommer and Caleb Peters added two hits.

The Bronchos Sunday also did a good job of manufacturing runs. UCO didn't hit any home runs to get to eight on Sunday, and only had three extra base hits of the 12.

J.D. Cameron got the start Sunday, and pitched great over 5 1/3 innings. Cameron earned his sixth win of the season after striking out four and allowing just one run and six hits.

UCO then used a collection of Brock Stuber, Ben Wusterbarth, Greg Hyde, and Gaylon Viney to close out the game and give the Bronchos a chance at their first MIAA Championship since joining the league in 2013.
