Bronchos open MIAA Tournament with win over Central Missouri

JOPLIN, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma opened the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association postseason tournament with a 4-3 win Friday.

The fifth-seeded Bronchos will play eight-seeded, and host, Missouri Southern in the second round at 6 p.m. Friday. MSSU upset top-seeded Emporia State Friday morning.

UCO jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning against Central Missouri. Brenton Washausen hit a 2-RBI single up the middle to score Justin Brown and Kyle Miskovsky.

Central Missouri answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game, and then took a 3-2 lead in the seventh.

But UCO kept at it. In the top of the eighth, with Dayne Sommer on third, T.J. Sparr grounded out the shortstop, scoring Sommer to tie the game.

Then in the ninth, Korey Floyd hit an RBI single to score Brown, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.

UCO took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Closer Gibson Russ came in with one out in the eighth, and was awarded the win after a quick ninth. Russ got the first batter to ground out before striking out the next two to earn his fifth win of the season.

Seven Bronchos got a hit Friday morning, Dyer and Floyd had two each to lead the way. J.J. Rogers got the start for UCO and struck out three in four innings. Rogers allowed five hits and two runs, one earned. J.D. Cameron came on in the fifth and threw 3 1/3, getting one strike out.

UCO beat Missouri Southern earlier this season. The Bronchos only won one of three, but the win came in Joplin on Warren Turner Field, where the teams will meet Friday night.
