Bronchos advance in MIAA Tournament

JOPLIN, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma beat Missouri Southern 2-1 Friday evening in the second round of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association postseason tournament.

The Bronchos advance in the winner's bracket and will play Saturday at 12:30 p.m. the winner of Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western for a berth in the MIAA Championship game. Either of those two teams would need to beat UCO twice to eliminate the Bronchos.

"Our guys are just fighting right now," UCO head coach John Martin said. "That was a great game tonight. But for these guys to come through and win two games today, I'm really proud of them for that. That takes a lot."

UCO beat Central Missouri Friday morning in the first round game that had been postponed from Thursday due to rain. Friday night, a pitcher's battle showcased a hard fought game.

Holden Capps started for the Bronchos and threw eight dominant innings. The senior lefty struck out three and allowed just four hits. More importantly, Capps didn't allow a run.

Missouri Southern, led by MIAA Player of the Year Max Hogan, had beaten the Bronchos twice this year. But UCO beat MSSU in Joplin last month, and would do it again Friday.

UCO used a big seventh inning to score the first runs of the game, putting two on the scoreboard.

After Brenton Washausen and Dayne Sommer struck out to lead off the inning, Jon Kamies reached safely on an error by the Missouri Southern third baseman – Hogan.

Anthony Alvarez then singled to right center to move Kamies to third base. And Trae Smith smacked a single down the right field line to score Kamies.

Then the Bronchos used a heads-up baseball play for another run. Smith attempted to steal second while Alvarez, who had already advanced to third on Smith's single, took off for home. Smith got in a run down just long enough for Alvarez to score and make it 2-0 UCO.

Gibson Russ came on in the ninth to seal the deal for the Bronchos. He did lead off the inning with a walk and an RBI-double to give Missouri Southern some life. But he struck out the next two batters and got a ground out to follow and end the game.

Capps improved to 8-4 on the season with the win. Russ picked up his 14th save, extending his record for most in a season in UCO history.

Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western are scheduled to play at 9 a.m. in Joplin Saturday. The winner will stay on the field and get ready for Central Oklahoma.
