Central drops final game in St. Joseph

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma dropped a 10-5 decision at Missouri Western Sunday in the series-finale against the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association foe.

The Bronchos (21-14-1, 11-13) scored first for the third time in as many games Sunday, but a big, six-run second inning for Missouri Western was too much to overcome for the Central.

"I thought we did okay at the plate," UCO head coach John Martin said. "What we did today has been enough in this series, but it wasn't today. Pitching has to be more consistent for us."

Brock Stuber got the start for the Bronchos, and threw a scoreless first. But the senior lefty allowed four runs on just two hits in the second. Stuber walked one in the first and two more in the second before J.J. Rogers came on in relief.

Rogers allowed another two runs in 2 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and a walk against 11 batters faced. Tabor Charles, Gaylon Viney and Bobby Pierce combined to finish the game for the Bronchos, who settled down a bit after the second.

But the damage had been done.

Central Oklahoma scored one in the first on an Anthony Alvarez double down the left field line. Jake Dyer led the game off with a single through that same side and scored on Alvarez's shot to make it 1-0.

Brenton Washausen jacked a solo home run with two outs in the second to make it 2-0 UCO before Western's big inning.

The Bronchos earned one run back in the fifth. Washausen scored again after leading off the inning with a single, advancing to second on an error, and crossing the plate on another Alvarez hit. That made it 6-3 Western.

But the home team grabbed one run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to make it 10-3.

The Bronchos scored in the eighth on a Korey Floyd home run, and again in the ninth when Dyer pelted home T.J. Sparr on an RBI double to left center.

Central Oklahoma is in the midst of 8 of 9 road games. Three are done, but another awaits Tuesday as UCO travels to Tahlequah for a matchup with Northeastern State. The Bronchos then play three at Northwest Missouri State before hosting NSU on April 25.
