Central works past Missouri Western Saturday

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team picked up a 4-1 road win at Missouri Western Saturday afternoon in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action.

The Bronchos improved to 21-13-1 on the season, 11-12 in league play, with the win. For Central, it was a good rebound from a tough Friday night defeat to Western.

"That was a good response from our guys," UCO head coach John Martin said. "You have to be able to put things behind you and I think they did that today."

Central Oklahoma got 8 1/3 innings out of its starter Friday, but Saturday used a four-pitcher combination to get through Western. Tyler Culver got the start and it was one of his best starts this season.

Culver threw four innings and struck out five. He allowed five hits and the only earned run of the game. J.D. Cameron came on in the fifth in relief of Culver and continued to the dominant performance. Cameron struck out four in three innings while only allowing one hit.

Greg Hyde provided the bridge for the Bronchos to get to their closer. Hyde, a senior righty, struck out one in the eighth to set the stage for Gibson Russ to earn a save. Russ retired the side in order and did it on just six pitches.

Russ recorded his ninth save of the season to move into second place on UCO's list for most saves in one season. Russ is also in fourth place with his 11 career saves. The all-time record is 13, held in a three-way tie by Cameron Karner, Ray Wood, and George Hauser.

UCO jumped out to an early lead for the second time in as many games in St. Joseph. The Bronchos scored two in the top of the second and made the short rally with two outs.

Kyle Miskovsky singled up the middle on an eight-pitch at bat, then T.J. Sparr smacked a double that scored Miskovsky. Sparr advanced to third on the play, and on the next play, scored when Brenton Washausen singled to left field.

Western scored its only run of the day on a solo home run in the bottom of the third.

In the eighth, Anthony Alvarez led off the inning and reached on an error by the Western shortstop. Alvarez also advanced to second on the throw. Next up, Korey Floyd reached on an error by the pitcher and the Bronchos had runners on the corners with nobody out.

Missouri Western changed pitchers, but on the next at bat, Sommer hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Alvarez and make it 3-1 Bronchos.

Justin Brown scored Xavier Warren in the top of the ninth to make it 4-1.

Central Oklahoma finished with 12 hits on the day. Alvarez, Miskovsky, and Brown each had two to lead the team.

The final game in the MIAA series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
