Bronchos clipped by Griffons in series opener

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma dropped the series opener at Missouri Western 5-2 Friday night in the first of three Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association games on tap for this weekend.

The game was a pitcher's duel between aces until the final swing of the bat with a full count and two outs in the bottom of the ninth and the game tied 2-2.

Holden Capps got the start for the Bronchos and looked dominant, striking out six batters in 8 1/3 innings. He had allowed just two runs. But Capps faced a tough task in the ninth. His first out came on a ground ball following his 100th pitch of the evening. The next four pitches were balls and suddenly Missouri Western had two on, the winning run in scoring position.

The Bronchos opted for closer Gibson Russ, who came in and got the second out on a pop-fly. But Russ fell behind in the count to Logan Marston, who had an RBI single earlier in the game. Russ battled to a 3-2 count, but on the next pitch, Martson took a shot and hit a three-run walk-off homer.

"That's a tough way to finish," UCO head coach John Martin said. "Our guys really battled tonight and that was a really good game with both pitchers throwing like they did. It's just really unfortunate to come out on the wrong end of it."

Capps got the loss as two of the final three runs belonged to him. He fell to 4-3 on the season.

For the Broncho offense, Jake Dyer led the charge. The junior outfielder collected half of the Bronchos six hits on the night. He blasted a solo home run on the first pitch of the game and later scored Dayne Sommer on an RBI single up the middle in the eighth inning to tie the game 2-2. Dyer finished 3 of 4 with two RBIs.

Trae Smith, Anthony Alvarez and Sommer also collected one hit apiece on the night for UCO. Richard Peoples got the win for Western to improve to 6-2 on the season.

The second game of the series is Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Spring Sports Complex in St. Joseph.
