Broncho offense comes alive in sweep of Washburn

EDMOND – Gibson Russ broke two school records with one pitch, Jake Dyer hit three doubles in one game, and Holden Capps struck out a season-high 10 to lead the University of Central Oklahoma to a doubleheader sweep of Washburn in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play Sunday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos (27-17-1, 17-16) played the doubleheader after rain forced the postponement of Saturday's game.

The rain didn't stop Sunday though, neither did strong winds in near-freezing temperatures. And neither did the Broncho offense.

UCO racked up 11 hits to win Game 1, 8-6, and then scored 15 runs on 15 hits in a 15-7 bruising in the second game.

"We've had a few games where we really showcase our offensive ability and today was one, or two rather, of those games," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We did a great job being patient in the batter's box and then did a great job of not leaving all our guys standing on the bases."

Jake Dyer, who has led the Broncho offense all season, continued to do so Sunday. The junior outfielder was 1 of 2 in the first game, but also drew two walks. He added an RBI and a run scored. In the second game, Dyer went 3-for-4 with three doubles, and again drew a walk. He scored three times in Game 2 as well.

Side-spitting on-and-off rains may have gave the pitchers a fit Sunday – the Bronchos did allow 6 and 7 runs respectively – but UCO got the better of it.

In the first game, the Bronchos jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with just one out.

Dyer led off with a walk, then Korey Floyd singled, then Brenton Washausen walked. With a quick opportunity to strike, and Dayne Sommer at the plate, UCO gained a 1-0 lead after Sommer watched four balls go by, drawing the third walk in four at bats for Central.

The troubles continued for Washburn, as a wild pitch allowed Floyd to score and Washausen and Sommer to move up.

Jon Kamies stepped up and beat out an infield single to the shortstop as Washuasen crossed the plate. That made it 3-0 UCO. Anthony Alvarez then the singled to the shortstop himself and scored Sommer to make it 4-0.

T.J. Sparr was next and before he could do any damage, he was plunked with a pitch. That loaded the bases for Kyle Miskovsky, who would strike out for the first out of the inning.

Justin Brown was up next and he too drew a walk – the fourth of the inning – and Kamies scored to make it 5-0. Washburn made a pitching change after that, then Dyer hit a sacrifice fly in his second at bat of the inning to make it 6-0 with two outs. Floyd fouled out to the catcher to end the inning.

Washburn got four back in the third inning alone, but couldn't keep pace with Central.

Sparr smacked a solo home run to left center in the bottom of the third to make it 7-4. Then Floyd hit an RBI single in the fifth to make it 8-6.

Central Oklahoma got hits from eight different batters in the first game Sunday, and two hits from Floyd, Kamies, and Miskovsky.

Tyler Culver got the start for the Bronchos in the first game. He was charged with four earned runs, and saw all six runs cross the plate. He allowed seven hits in 4 1/3 innings and struck out four.

J.D. Cameron got the win for the first game, after coming on in relief of Culver in the fifth and finishing the next 3 2/3 without allowing a run. Cameron walked two, but didn't give up a hit.

Then it was time for the closer, Gibson Russ, who entered the game with 10 saves on the season and 13 for his career. Both were school records.

Russ came on to start the top of the ninth, and began with a five-pitch walk to the leadoff man. Russ settled in quick though, striking out the next batter before getting a foul pop-up for the second out.

Washburn's batter stepped up, and Russ threw a ball on the first pitch. Then he got a swinging strike, then a fouled off pitch to make it 1-2. The next pitch, Russ fooled the batter, got him swinging again and recorded the third and final out to set two new records.

Russ broke the single season record with his 11th save. Cameron Karner had 10 in 2007. Russ also broke the career saves record with his 14th save. Karner, Ray Wood, and George Hauser each had 13 in their Central careers.

In the second game it was more of the same for the Broncho offense. Dyer and Kamies each had three hits to lead the charge. Floyd had four RBIs in the game and Sommer three, to lead that category. And Kyle Miskovsky knocked his fifth homer of the season to give the Bronchos the 15-7 win. UCO scored in seven of eight innings.

Holden Capps started the second game for UCO, and dazzled in seven innings. Though he allowed five earned runs on seven hits and did walk three, Capps also struck out a season-high 10 on the outing.

Greg Hyde and Ben Wusterbarth combined to finish off the job for the Bronchos.

UCO has just three games left this season. The Bronchos host Nebraska-Kearney for all three next weekend, with the first game set for Friday at 3 p.m.

UCO is currently in seventh place in the MIAA standings, with the top eight teams making the postseason tournament in two weeks.
