Bronchos drop finale at Northwest Missouri

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team lost 5-2 to Northwest Missouri in the final game of its three-game Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series Sunday afternoon.

The Bronchos held a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth as they looked to take two of three from the Bearcats. But after Northwest made its big rally, scoring three in the bottom of the fifth, UCO couldn't come up with anymore offense late to make a comeback.

"That's disappointing," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We score 10 runs in seven innings on Saturday and can't get half of that today. But we need to move on quick and focus on the final two weeks now."

Jake Dyer led off the game Sunday with a single. The junior then stole second, and advanced to third on an error by the catcher. Dayne Sommer hit a ground ball to the shortstop later in the frame and Dyer scored to give the Bronchos a 1-0 lead.

Northwest tied it up with a run in the bottom of the third, but the Bronchos responded.

Brenton Washausen smacked a two-out home to left field in the top of the fourth to give UCO a 2-1 lead.

Holden Capps got the start for the Bronchos Sunday, and through four was throwing great. Unfortunately for the Central, Capps was finished in the fifth after allowing three runs to score. The senior finished with 4 2/3 innings and five strikeouts, but six hits, four walks and four earned runs.

UCO had 10 hits Sunday, which was the most in the three games against Northwest this weekend. Dyer, Jon Kamies and Justin Brown each went 2-for-4 on the day to lead Central.

The Bronchos are now 23-17-1 on the season and 13-15 in league play. UCO has seven games left in the season. UCO plays at Northeastern State on Tuesday before hosting three game weekend series with Washburn and Nebraska-Kearney to end the regular season.
