Bronchos beat Emporia State again

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team made it two in a row against fifth-ranked Emporia State with a 4-3 win Friday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos, who also came from behind to get the win for the second day in a row, improved 20-10-1 on the season and 10-9 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action with the win.

"We really showed some fight today," UCO head coach John Martin said. "Just like Thursday, we got ahead, then fell behind, but the guys didn't give up. That's what it is going to take down the stretch, games like these."

Holden Capps got the start on the day for Central, and struck out five in 4 2/3, but left with the game tied 2-2. Ben Wusterbarth picked up the win after throwing 3 1/3 innings of relief work.

Gibson Russ picked up a four-out save to send the Bronchos to its third-straight win. Russ earned his eighth save of the season to move into a tie for third-place on Central Oklahoma's list for most saves in one season.

The Bronchos put one on the board in the first inning Friday. Korey Floyd earned a one-out walk, and then moved to third base after Jon Kamies singled down the left field line. As Trae Smith stood in the batter's box, Kamies attempted to steal second but was thrown out. However, Floyd took off for home as Emporia State catcher Mason Brown made a throw down to second. Floyd scored to make it 1-0 UCO.

The Bronchos made it 2-0 in the bottom of the third. Chris Lobato reached on an error by the Emporia State shortstop to lead off the inning. After Justin Brown popped out, Jake Dyer drew a walk to put two on for Central. Then Floyd flied out.

With two on and two outs, Kamies stepped up and again, delivered a big hit. The All-American singled down the left field line for the second time in the game and Lobato scored on the play.

Emporia State scored twice in the fifth, prompting the move from Capps to Wusterbarth for the Bronchos. Then ESU picked up another in the top of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.

But the Bronchos responded.

In the bottom of the sixth, Anthony Alvarez led off with a triple to deep right field. The Emporia outfielder got spun around trying to make the catch, then bobbled the ball as he tried to pick it up and couldn't get it in in time to catch Alvarez.

Alvarez scored during the next at bat when a wild pitch trickled off toward the Emporia dugout. The throw from the catcher to the pitcher at home plate wasn't in time and Alvarez tied the game at three.

In the bottom of the seventh, Floyd led off with a single up the middle. After Kamies struck out, Floyd stole second. Then after T.J. Sparr popped out, Floyd stole third. Alvarez reached on a throwing error by the shortstop – the first baseman came off the bag on a routine 6-3 groundout that would have ended the inning – and Floyd crossed the plate for the fourth and final run of the game.

Russ came on with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and got a groundout out of Emporia State. He struck out the first two batters of the ninth before ESU picked up a two-out single, but the senior lefty struck out the final batter for the Broncho win.

The third and final game of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
