Bronchos blank Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma beat Missouri Southern 3-0 Tuesday afternoon in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action.

The Bronchos redeemed a loss to Southern in Edmond last week in the first game of three between the schools this season. Central will host the Lions next Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field in the final game of the season series.

Tuesday, Central Oklahoma got one of its best pitching performances of the season. The Bronchos blanked an opponent for just the second time this season.

"Today, that was a huge effort by our pitching staff," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We were able to get some hits, and fortunate enough to get some runs. But the pitchers did great today to give us a chance to win."

J.J. Rogers got the start for the Bronchos and threw five shutout innings, striking out three while allowing just five hits. Greg Hyde, Ben Wusterbarth, Gaylon Viney, and then Gibson Russ each threw one inning of relief duty for the Bronchos to preserve the shutout and get the Bronchos the win.

The Bronchos only managed six hits on offense Tuesday, but put them together at the right time to move runners around the bases.

In the third inning, Justin Brown led off with a double down the left field line, and advanced to third on a wild pitch while Jake Dyer stood at the plate. On the next pitch, Dyer did his best impersonation of Brown, and doubled down the left field line himself. Brown trotted across the plate and the Bronchos held a 1-0 lead.

In the fifth, Jon Kamies led off with a walk, and advanced to second on a Trae Smith groundout. Then Kyle Miskovsky singled to center field and Kamies scored the second run of the day.

Kamies thought he'd add a little more to the scoreboard, give his guys a little more room to work on defense, so the All-American smacked a one-out homer to left field in the top of the eighth inning to make it 3-0.

Russ earned his sixth save of the season after coming on in the bottom of the ninth. He got back-to-back groundouts to start the inning, and after giving up a walk and a single to add a bit of drama to the end, Russ got a pop-fly to end the game. Chris Lobato caught all five pitchers through the shutout Tuesday, and he caught the fly ball in foul territory to send the Bronchos out of Joplin as winners.

Central Oklahoma now heads back to Edmond to prepare for Emporia State this weekend. UCO hosts its MIAA foe in a three-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m. The teams will also play Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday in noon.
