Central drops second in a row to Pittsburg State

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma lost its second game in as many days to Pittsburg State Saturday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field, with the Bronchos falling 10-1 to their Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association opponent.

UCO is now 16-10-1 on the season, and 6-9 in league play. While Pitt State is 12-17 on the season and also 6-9 in league play.

"We've got to get back to what we were doing at the plate," UCO head coach John Martin said. "When you're not getting baserunners home, you're not going to win many games. We have to start making some runs when we get guys on."

The Bronchos left 12 on base Saturday. UCO left 11 on base Friday in a loss to Pittsburg State.

T.J. Sparr led the Bronchos from the plate Saturday. The designated hitter went 3-for-3 on the day and also drew a walk. But the Bronchos could only move Sparr across the plate once in the four times he got on.

Chris Lobato also had a three-hit day for the Bronchos, and the catcher added one RBI. But Lobato, like Sparr, was left on base three times.

Jon Kamies went 2-for-4 Saturday. Jake Dyer and Korey Floyd also added a hit on the day.

Tyler Culver got the start for the Bronchos and the junior righty finished the day with four strikeouts after four innings of work. He allowed six earned runs on seven hits and also walked four batters. Ben Wusterbarth and Greg Hyde each allowed two runs on three hits. Wusterbarth threw two innings and Hyde threw one. Gaylon Viney and Bobby Pierce each threw one inning and neither pitcher gave up a run.

The final game of the three-game MIAA series is set for Sunday at noon. The Bronchos will head to Joplin, Mo. after the game for a Tuesday conference showdown with Missouri Southern, before coming back to Edmond for their next four games.
