UCO Falls To Missouri Southern

EDMOND (March 22) – Central Oklahoma got behind early and never recovered in falling to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Missouri Southern 9-3 Wednesday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Lions took early control with a three-run home run in their first at bat and then pulled away down the stretch after the Bronchos closed to within 3-2 to hand UCO its third straight league loss.

"We had some chances to score a lot more runs and didn't take advantage," said head coach John Martin, whose team had 10 hits on the day.  "We're going through a rough stretch right now, but just have to stay the course and keep plugging."

The Bronchos fell to 16-8-1 on the season and 6-7 in the league, while MSSU improved to 17-10 and 9-4.

UCO cut into the Lions' early 3-0 lead in the second when Trae Smith ripping a one-out single through the right side and then scored on consecutive two-out walks to Glenn Reeves, Dayne Sommer and Justin Brown.

The Bronchos failed to score after loading the bases in the third, but pulled within 3-2 in the fourth.  Korey Floyd led off the inning with a double down the left field line, went to third on Reeves' sacrifice bunt and trotted home on Sommer's single to center field.

MSSU pushed its lead to 4-2 in the fifth with a solo homer and went up 6-2 in the sixth with a pair of unearned runs.  Floyd started the bottom of the sixth with a line-drive homer to left field – his fifth of the season – to make it 6-3, but the Lions put the game away with three runs in the eighth.

UCO returns to league play Friday, hosting Pittsburg State at 3 p.m. to start a three-day, three-game series.
