Bronchos fall at Southwestern

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma lost for the first time this season Wednesday afternoon in a 3-2 shortfall at Southwestern Oklahoma State.

The Bronchos (3-1) held a 1-0 lead, and had the game tied at two in the seventh, but couldn't come up with the offense to edge the Bulldogs.

"I'd of liked to see the guys be able to dig down and get some more offense going," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We didn't have it today though. We'll go home and have a couple of good practices and start preparing for East Central."

Blake Gooden got the win for Southwestern after coming on in the sixth, and throwing two innings of no-hit ball for the Bulldogs. Gooden did allow one earned run.

Greg Hyde got the loss for the Bronchos. Hyde came on in the seventh with the game tied 2-2. But the senior ended the day with just one inning pitched, one earned run, one hit allowed and two walks.

The Bronchos, who scored 20 runs against Southern Nazarene in Edmond on Tuesday, couldn't connect Wednesday in Weatherford. UCO scattered four hits on the day. Each of those came from a different hitter and all came between the 5-8 batters in the lineup.

UCO was able to get on the board first Wednesday, and quickly. In the top of the second, Korey Floyd led off with a single, and Glenn Reeves added another single on the next at bat.

Dayne Sommer than sacrificed the two runners ahead one spot. And after an Xavier Warren strikeout, a wild pitch allowed Floyd to score and Reeves to move to third. Reed stayed there as the inning ended on a Justin Brown pop-out on the next at bat, but the Bronchos led 1-0.

Brock Stuber got the start for the Bronchos and threw three really solid innings. The fourth however, was where Stuber missed. He ended the day with a no decision after allowing four hits and two walks, two runs, both unearned, and striking out three.

In the bottom of the fourth, Joel Baxley led off with a walk, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. He moved to third on a Garret Gaunt groundout, and then scored when Patrick O'Toole slapped a grounder to UCO third baseman Anthony Alvarez, who couldn't field a tough hop and let the ball through. O'Toole then scored on a Ruben Rodriguez single on the next at bat.

UCO will play a doubleheader at East Central in Ada, Okla. on Saturday. The Bronchos and the Tigers will also play one game to finish a three-game series on Sunday. Sunday's finale will be played in Edmond at Wendell Simmons Field.
