UCO Falls To No. 1 Northwest Missouri

MARYVILLE, Mo. (Dec. 2) – Top-ranked Northwest Missouri showed why it is the class of NCAA Division II here Saturday afternoon, holding Central Oklahoma to 12 first-half points en route to handing the Bronchos a 60-47 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setback.

The defending national champion Bearcats limited UCO to 39.5 percent shooting – including 27.8 percent in the decisive first half – and forced 19 turnovers to win their 20th straight game.  Central saw a five-game winning streak snapped in falling to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the league, while NWMSU moved to 8-0 and 2-0.

"Northwest has a great team and they really got after us in the first half," head coach Tom Hankins said.  "I was proud of the way we kept fighting and we did some good things in the second half.  It's a tough loss, but I think we learned some things from it that will help make us better."

The Bronchos never led, missing their first two shots of the game while also committing two turnovers as the Bearcats took a quick 4-0 lead before Jake Hammond scored UCO's initial basket.

NWMSU answered that with a 10-2 run to move ahead 14-4 and went on to the big 19-point (31-12) halftime cushion.

The Bearcat lead was still 19 at 36-17 early in the second half before back-to-back 3-pointers by Marqueese Grayson and Marquis Johnson got UCO within 13 (36-23).  Buckets by Jordan Hemphill and Anthony Roberson countered an NWMSU score to make it an 11-point game (38-27) with 12:19 left to play.

Hemphill made one of two free throws at the 10:03 mark to keep the Bronchos within 11 at 39-28, but Northwest answered that with an 11-2 scoring spurt to go up 50-30 with 7:36 left and UCO was unable to respond.

Nobody scored in double figures for Central, with Johnson and Hemphill scoring nine points apiece to lead the team.  Leading scorer Corbin Byford was held to a season-low two points.

The Bronchos finish off their three-game
league road trip Tuesday at intrastate rival Northeastern State.
