UCO Tops Northeastern State

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team beat Northeastern State 82-71 Tuesday night at the Tahlequah Event Center in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics action.

Corbin Byford led the charge against a never-say-die Northeastern State. The senior center had his most impressive outing of the season, scoring 22 points. He added 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.

"Corbin was big for us," UCO head coach Tom Hankins said. "He stepped up when we needed him to, and that helped us because we didn't play the best game. We made too many mistakes with the ball in our hands. Corbin helped us cover that up a little."

Marquis Johnson also gave the Bronchos a boot on the offensive end. UCO had 14 turnovers on the night, but managed to make up for lost opportunities with 24 free throws. Johnson was 10 of 12 from the line himself on his way to a 12-point, 5-assist night.

Jordan Londan's 14 points off the bench also masked a couple of hiccups in the Broncho win. London sank a team-high four 3-pointers.

UCO used a combination of strong shooting and getting to the free-throw line to build its first half lead. Central shot 12 of 26 from the floor including four 3-pointers, but added 11 of 13 free throws to take a 39-28 halftime lead.

It was a well-rounded first-half effort for the Bronchos. Johnson and Byford each had eight points to lead way. London also scored eight points off the bench to provide a big spark for UCO midway through the half.

The Bronchos trailed Northeastern at the first media timeout of the half, just under 15 minutes, 12-11. But London helped start a run that led to UCO leading 30-17 by the next media timeout just five minutes later.

The Bronchos never trailed in the second half as UCO rebounded from just its second loss of the season this past weekend.

Marqueese Johnson also scored in double figures for the Bronchos, adding 12 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Josh Holliday, who played valuable minutes off the bench thanks to his strong ball-handling ability, added six points. Anthony Roberson also scored six Tuesday night.

Central returns home for a pair its second MIAA contest in three days Thursday. The Bronchos host Southwest Baptist at Hamilton Field House at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
