Hornets Sting UCO In League Tourney

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (May 12) – Jake Dyer and Jacob Borrego got Central Oklahoma out to a good start, but the Bronchos couldn't stay up with Emporia State in dropping a 10-3 decision in the first round of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Post-season Tournament here Thursday afternoon.

Dyer opened the game with a triple to right-center field and promptly scored on Borrego's single to left field to stake UCO to a quick 1-0 lead and that held up until the third when the Hornets scored three runs to move in front for good.

ESU added single scores in the fifth and sixth innings to make it 5-1 and then pushed across five in the eighth to break the game open.

The Bronchos fell to 29-21 and will face intrastate rival Northeastern State at 9 a.m. Friday in an elimination game.  The Hornets improved to 36-15 and play Washburn in a Friday winner's bracket contest.

"We got the early lead and weren't able to add to it, though we had some chances," head coach John Martin said.  "Emporia just had too much for us today, but we'll regroup and come out ready to go tomorrow."

UCO finished with nine hits, getting two apiece from Dyer, Borrego, Jon Kamies and Trae Smith.

The Bronchos didn't score after their early attack until the eighth when Borrego had a one-out infield hit, went to second on a groundout and scampered home on Kamies' single to right field.

That made it 5-2, but ESU came back with its five-run eruption in the bottom of that frame to go up 10-2.  UCO's final score came on J.T. Sparr's one-out homer down the left field line in the ninth.

The Hornets finished with 14 hits against four UCO pitchers.
