Sparr, Hellbusch Spark Late Rally

TOPEKA, Kan. (April 28) – T.J. Sparr and Isaac Hellbusch came through with clutch run-scoring hits in the ninth and 10th innings to lift Central Oklahoma to a key 7-5 come-from-behind Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association triumph over Washburn here Thursday night.

Sparr's two-run double capped a three-run ninth that pulled the Bronchos even at 5-all to force extra innings and Hellbusch blasted a two-run homer in the top of the 10th to give UCO its first and only lead in the opener of the three-game league series.

The Bronchos improved to 26-18 on the season and 18-15 in the conference while dropping the second-place Ichabods to 29-15 and 24-10.  The teams are set to meet again at 5 p.m. Friday before finishing at 1 p.m. Saturday.

"Our guys hung tough and just kept battling the whole game," head coach John Martin said.  "We had a chance to put up a lot more runs and left some guys stranded, but we came up with big hits at the end to pull out a huge road win."

UCO finished with 17 hits in the contest, but stranded 14 runners.

Jacob Borrego led the offensive onslaught with a 4-for-6 performance at the plate, while Jake Dyer and Jon Kamies had three hits apiece.

The Bronchos trailed 5-0 entering the sixth before finally getting on the scoreboard when Kamies led off with a double to right-center field and scored a batter later on Borrego's single to left.

UCO added another run in the eighth when Trae Smith smacked a one-out double to right-center and scored on Korey Floyd's two-out single up the middle.

Jake Dyer started the ninth-inning rally with a lead-off single through the left side, with Kamies drawing a one-out walk and Hellbusch getting hit by pitch to load the bases.  Borrego's single to right scored Dyer and Sparr came through an out later with his game-tying double down the right field line.

Reliever Gibson Russ put WU down in order in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings and the Bronchos finally took the lead in the 10th when Kamies drew a two-out walk and Hellbusch followed with his 10th homer of the season, this one a shot to right-center.

Russ easily maintained the lead, getting two strikeouts and a fly out to end the game in earning the pitching win.
