Hyde, Sparr Lead Bronchos

EDMOND (April 27) – T.J. Sparr knocked in the go-ahead runs and Greg Hyde threw 5 1/3 innings of stellar relief to lead Central Oklahoma past Northeastern State 7-3 Wednesday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

Sparr's two-run single broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning and the Bronchos added two insurance runs in the eighth to secure the win in the home finale.  UCO improved to 25-18 on the season and 17-15 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

"It was good to get a win we needed to have in our last home game," first-year head coach John Martin said.  "We came up with some key hits and Greg really threw well for us in a crucial situation."

Hyde went 5 1/3 innings in relief of starter Austin Stewart and allowed just two hits and one run while striking out five.  The junior right-hander retired the final 10 batters he faced in an 83-pitch outing and improved to 4-1 with the win.

Gibson Russ came on in the ninth and got the final three outs.

Trae Smith went 3-for-4 to lead a 13-hit attack, while Sparr had two hits and three runs batted in.  Jacob Borrego and Korey Floyd also had two hits.

The RiverHawks scored once in the top of the first to take the early lead, but UCO came back with three in the second.

Isaac Hellbusch started that frame with a lead-off home run to right-center field – his ninth of the season – and Borrego followed with a double.  Borrego eventually scored on a double play and then Sparr clubbed his seventh homer of the season to center field to make it 3-1.

NSU got one run back in the third and then tied it in the fifth before the Bronchos broke the deadlock in the sixth.

Borrego drew a one-out walk and went to third on Floyd's two-out single, with a wild pitch moving Floyd to second.  Sparr came through with a single to right to plate both runs and put UCO on top to stay.

The Bronchos added two more in the eighth, scoring one on an error and then getting a two-out RBI single from Hunter Schellhardt.

UCO resumes conference play Thursday night, traveling to Topeka, Kan. to take on Washburn in the opener of a three-game series.
