Hellbusch, Russ Lead Bronchos Past Lincoln

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (April 16) – Isaac Hellbusch's two-run single in the eighth inning put Central Oklahoma on top and Gibson Russ escaped a ninth-inning jam as the Bronchos held on for an 8-7 victory over Lincoln here Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Tigers led off the ninth with a single and then an error put runners on the corners with no outs, but Russ extinguished the threat with a strikeout and consecutive fly outs.

UCO improved to 22-15 on the season and 14-12 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with the narrow win.  The Bronchos gun for a sweep of the three-game series at noon Sunday.

"We left too many runners on base and that almost cost us, but Gibson did a great job getting us out of a jam at the end," head coach John Martin said.  "Hopefully we come out ready to play tomorrow and keep swinging the bats like we have been."

UCO finished with 17 hits in the contest as six players had at least two, but the Bronchos stranded 13 runners.

Jake Dyer and Jon Kamies led the offense with three hits apiece, while Hellbusch, Trae Smith, Brenton Washausen and Korey Floyd had two each.

UCO was up 6-3 after Smith's lead-off homer in the fifth, but the Blue Tigers scored twice in the bottom of that frame and then again in the seventh to take a 7-6 advantage.

That lead didn't last long.

Landon Eason and Kamies led off the eighth with back-to-back singles before advancing on Jacob Borrego's sacrifice bunt and then Hellbusch came through with a single through the left side to drive in the tying and go-ahead runs.

Russ made sure the Bronchos stayed in front with his ninth-inning heroics.

The junior left-hander gave up just one hit while striking out two and walking none in going the last 2 2/3 innings to pick up the first win of his UCO career.  He was the last of four pitchers the Bronchos used on the day.
